Check your claim

Step 1 of 4

Free and confidential. The check tells you whether you may have a claim and the time limits that apply. What your claim is worth depends on your injuries and losses; a panel lawyer will assess that in your free consultation.

Cyclists claim under the motor schemes

A cyclist hit by a car, ute, truck or opening car door claims against the vehicle’s CTP insurer, or the no-fault scheme in Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT — no vehicle or insurance of your own required. Dooring is a claim against the parked vehicle’s policy. A crash caused by a road defect (a pothole, missing grate, unsafe works) is instead a public liability claim against the council or contractor, with shorter notice expectations, so getting the claim routed correctly matters early.

What cyclist claims turn on

Identification and evidence. If the driver did not stop, the nominal defendant covers unidentified vehicles, but the notice periods are short and a police report is essential. Helmet and bike damage evidence impact; a bike shop’s damage report is cheap and persuasive. Strava, Garmin or phone ride data can establish speed and position and has decided liability disputes.

State rules and time limits

The scheme, thresholds and notice periods are set state by state; pick where the accident happened:
